Salisbury painter Mark Stephenson has been selected for the La Macina di San Cresci Artist Residency Program near Florence, Italy.
After a lengthy application process, involving submission of work samples, artist statements and a resume, Stephenson was chosen for the program.
He will stay at the retreat, a 10th century church complex converted into artist studios and accommodations, for two weeks in May 2014.
La Macina hosts artists of all disciplines from around the world. Stephenson will hold a local exhibit, open to the public, of paintings completed while at the residency in late summer or early fall of 2014.
He hopes to use this time to grow as an artist, learn from other residents, and make international connections.
Stephenson’s studio is located at 110 S. Main St., Suite A in Salisbury.
He has had a studio and gallery in downtown Salisbury since 2011.
Stephenson is active in local and regional exhibitions, most recently winning the “Best in Show” at the 2013 Carolina Artists Expo.
The Literary Bookpost will be the business sponsor for a portion of the residency.
Stephenson is still accepting sponsorships from businesses and individuals. Supporters of his trip will receive their choice of various paintings, including those to be completed while in Italy.
