Grandson says he was at River Road home of murdered grandfather, but didn’t remove crime scene tape

RICHFIELD — The grandson of J.D. Furr, who was found dead outside his home Wednesday morning, said Saturday that he did not remove crime scene tape at the River Road property, contrary to what was reported by news media.

Rowan investigators returned to the River Road on Friday after emergency communications received information someone believed to be the grandson, Jeff Steen, was at the property.

Steen spoke briefly with a Post reporter Saturday saying he’d been there, but did not remove any crime scene tape.

“I wasn’t there at that time,” he said by phone.

He said there were some “guys we leased the land to” who were there regarding some hunting equipment.

Steen found his mother, Sandra Steen, Wednesday morning lying in the driveway. She’d been beaten.

Furr, 87, was also beaten and found behind his house near a detached carport.

Furr and his daughter lived in a remote area off Stokes Ferry Road, with few close neighbors.

Sandra Steen remains in the intensive care unit at a hospital in this region.

Investigators did say there was an apparent robbery with some items taken from the property, but have not specified the items.

Anyone with information regarding the investigation is asked to contact Lt. Chad Moose at 704-216-8687 or Sgt. Jason Owens at 704-216-8683.
