Livingstone’s football team came close to achieving that signature win it’s been looking for all season, but it fell to Fayetteville State 34-31 on Saturday at Alumni Stadium.

Drew Powell was 25-for-39 passing for 247 yard and two touchdowns. Powell’s longest pass was for 50 yards to Avery Collins. Powell also rushed for 86 yards.


Anthony Holland’s final home performance ended with him recording 208 all-purpose yards, 48 receiving and 139 on kick returns.

Justin Forte rushed for 118 yards and one touchdown as the Blue Bears (2-7, 1-6 CIAA) piled up 491 yards of offense.

Kenneth White led Livingstone’s defense with 11 tackles.

Derek Bryant threw for 280 yards for the Broncos (6-3).

Livingstone led the Broncos 17-14 at halftime and had a 10-point lead in the second half.

The Blue Bears took a 31-27 lead on Forte’s 2-yard scoring run with 8:07 left.

With the Blue Bears leading at the beginning of the fourth quarter, a crucial fumble set the Broncos up for the deciding touchdown.

The Blue Bears will play their final game Saturday when they travel to face the Dragons of Virginia University of Lynchburg. Kickoff is at 1 p.m.

Prep soccer

Carson beat Asheville 5-0 in the second round of the 3A state playoffs on Saturday in China Grove.

Carson took a 4-0 halftime lead on two goals by Brandon Flores and goals by Colton Correll and Raunel Vasquez.

Flores found the net in the second half for a hat trick.

Fox Correll and Michael Maldanado had assists.

Fifth-seeded Carson will play at No. 4 seed South Iredell on Wednesday.

Prep cross country

In the 3A boys cross country state meet in Kernersville, East Rowan finished 13th in the 16-team field.

East’s Conor Honeycutt ran 16:36 and finished 37th. Other times for East were Josh Rowell (17:04), Justin Allen (17:24), Jason Basso (17:53), Cal Meyers (17:56), Jason Troutman (18:00) and Chance Brown (18:25).

Carson’s Zachary Marchinko, competing as an indvidual, ran a time of 16:55 and finished 53rd.

• In the 3A girls cross country state meet, West Rowan’s Rebecca Parker ran as an individual and was time in 20:06. She finished 39th.

• In the 2A girls cross country state meet, Salisbury’s Susannah Dixon ran 21:00 and finished 35th.

• In the 4A boys cross country state meet< A.L. Brown’s Kellen Corson ran 17:39.

Prep volleyball

In 1A, Starmount defeated Raleigh Charter 25-10, 25-14 and 25-15 in Saturday’s championship game.

In 2A, Hendersonville defeated Wheatmore 25-20, 26-24, 22-25 and 25-21 in Saturday’s championship game.

In 4A, Raleigh Wakefield defeated Cornelius Hough 25-22, 25-19, 20-25 and 25-22 in Saturday’s championship.

College soccer

Catawba’s women’s soccer team beat Mars Hill 5-0 on Saturday and earned a home match in the upcoming SAC tournament.

Catawba (10-7-1, 6-4-1) got first-half goals from Amy Iwanicki and Julia Conte and second-half goals from Alex Hulsey, Allison Parker (West Rowan) and Sophie Waller.

• Catawba’s men’s soccer team lost 2-0 to Mars Hill on Saturday at Frock Field.

The Indians (8-7-1, 4-6-1) got three saves from Frankie Cardelle (Salisbury).

Catawba will be seeded eighth for the SAC tourney.
