A perfect fall afternoon once again was the setting for Spooky Sprint 5K and Fun Run at Catawba College’s Campus on Sunday. Lots of goblins and cartoon characters were among the participants as over 200 competed in both races.

Martin Thorne of Salisbury was the overall winner in 18 minutes and 10 seconds. Kelly Lowman smoked the women’s field in a sparkling 19 minutes and 28 seconds. Christian Kluttz won the ½-mile fun run with a time of 3 minutes and 9 seconds. Alyssa Lang led the girls with a clocking of 3 minutes and 36 seconds.

Lowman, quickly becoming the dominant figure in Rowan County women’s racing, said, “I followed two girls for about half a mile and passed them on Statesville Boulevard. I wanted to focus on my pace and not the overall time, so I kept my watch running on the pace throughout the race. It was a great day for the race but I did feel the wind a few times on the course. Overall, I am just fortunate to be running so well.” Lowman completed the Myrtle Beach Half Marathon last week in 1 hour and 33 minutes before knocking 30 seconds off her best 5K time on Sunday afternoon.

Dr. Jim Duncan, race director for the Spooky Sprint, said, “The Lord provided us a perfect day for the Spooky Sprint Run/Walk today. This was truly a family day. Many family and friends ran or walked together. The spectators gave their enthusiastic support as the runners/walkers crossed the finish line. A special thank you to our fantastic sponsors, the Rowan Rotary, and all who joined us for this yearly fun-filled event.”

Sponsors for the event included Cheerwine, Wells Fargo, Law Offices of Wallace and Graham, Cloninger Ford and Toyota, Catawba College, Novant Health and GCS.
