SALISBURY — In an automated phone message to parents, the Rowan-Salisbury School System said it plans to re-hire a former director of secondary education as the interim principal at Salisbury High School.

A week after Dr. Avis Williams left the top spot at Salisbury High, the system tapped Kathy McDuffie as the school’s interim principal. Williams accepted a job as executive director of curriculum and instruction for secondary schools for Guilford County Schools in late September.

In an automated phone message Thursday night, School Spokeswoman Rita Foil announced the decision.

“… Mrs. Kathy McDuffie will assume the position of interim principal at Salisbury High School beginning Oct. 14 and will remain in this position through the completion of the first semester,” Foil said. “During this interim period, staff will be committed to invite the faculty and the community in the process of recruiting the best candidate to fill the position of principal at Salisbury High School.”

Williams took over the top spot at Salisbury High when Dr. Windsor Eagle retired after more than 30 years in the post.

She came to Salisbury High after working as the principal of J.E. Williams Technology Middle School in Huntsville, Ala., and an adjunct professor at Middle Tennessee State University.

McDuffie is coming back out of retirement after working in education for 32 years, the last nine of which were at Rowan-Salisbury.

McDuffie retired in March after she said she wanted to spend more time with her family.
