Civitan International President Joe G. Parker of Durham will visit the Civitan Club of Salisbury on Thursday, Sept. 26 to help install the club’s new officers and present awards for past achievements.
Parker began his term as Civitan International President on Oct. 1, 2012, after a one-year term on the Civitan International Board of Directors. Over the years, Parker has been recognized several times for his work with Civitan and has received the Club, District and International Honor Keys. Parker is a graduate of Appalachian State University and received his master’s degree in educational administration from North Carolina A&T. He retired as an educator and administrator with Durham Public Schools. He and his wife, Evalee, have two grown children, Whitney and Josh, both Civitans. When he is not volunteering with Civitan, Parker volunteers with the Durham Regional Hospital Wellness Center.
The Civitan Club of Salisbury is 91 years old. Its main fundraising projects include the Golf Classic (Oct. 11 this year), Spaghetti Feast each April, fruitcake sales during the holidays, and candy boxes found in many restaurants in the area. Monies raised support Boys & Girls Homes, Nazareth Children’s Home, Special Olympics, Victory Junction Camp and the ARC, among others. Members meet each Thursday at lunchtime at the Country Club of Salisbury.
Civitan International is an organization of clubs dedicated to volunteering in their communities, with a special emphasis on helping those with developmental disabilities.
