Fibrant outage caused by fiber cut in Charlotte; maintenance to continue next week
SALISBURY — A Fibrant outage on Wednesday was caused by the city’s fiber-optic transport provider DukeNet, which had a fiber line cut in the Charlotte region, a city spokeswoman said.
Fibrant’s Internet service went down briefly, then rolled over to the city’s secondary provider, Elaney Hasselmann said. Phone and TV service were not affected, she said.
Fibrant is the city’s new high-speed broadband utility that competes with private companies to sell Internet, cable TV and phone services to Salisbury residents and businesses.
Fibrant has had several scheduled maintenance periods this week from midnight to 5 a.m., with one more scheduled for late next week for final cleanup, Hasselmann said. No service disruptions are expected, she said.
“Maintenance work performed this week and next is to prepare our network to be able to deploy Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) to our larger potential customers,” Hasselmann said in an email.
Border Gateway Protocol is the routing protocol of the Internet. It’s security-focused and is often the protocol used between gateway hosts on the web.
