County unveils new 911 center today

SALISBURY — The general public will get their first look at the county’s new 911 Center during an open house today at 5 p.m.

Rowan County Communications Director Rob Robinson said the public will have access to the com center and the office suite at the telecommunications center as a part of the grand opening. The Rowan County Telecommunications Center is expected to begin housing a portion of the county’s 911 operators later this month.

“We’ve tentatively scheduled, right now, Sept. 16 as the go-live date,” Robinson said. “That only consists of moving the county dispatch center into the facility.”

The city and county sparred over consolidating the 911 centers in late 2011 before the two agreed on moving into a new 911 Center.

Per the agreement, the city transferred the responsibility of telecommunications, 10 employees, equipment, maintenance and the overhead expenses to maintain the 911 center to the county. As support for the consolidated 911 services, the city will pay Rowan County an annual payment of $50,000 per year for 10 years, totaling $500,000.

County commissioners will be among those at the facility’s ribbon cutting at 4 p.m., Robinson said, and the open house will start at 5 p.m. and last until 8 p.m.

The telecommunications center is located at 1090 Corporate Center Drive in Salisbury.
