Area Sports Briefs:

Alex Nianouris (Salisbury, Davidson) lost in the final of the North Carolina Amateur Match Play Championship on Sunday.

UNC freshman Carter Jenkins defeated Nianouris 6 and 5. Jenkins was 6-under through 13 holes.

Jenkins chipped in for an eagle on the first hole Sunday and never trailed. He also won holes 3,4,5,6 and 7 and 9 to take an insurmountable lead.

Nianouris won No. 11 with a 25-foot birdie putt, but it was the only hole he won. Jenkins went 6-up with a birdie on No. 12, and the match was over when both golfers parred 13.

Nianouris won four matches to reach the final.

Jenkins, who played at Leesville Road High in Raleigh, won the Carolinas Amateur Championship in July and won the North Carolina Junior and Dogwood State Junior last year.

• In Saturday’s Dogfight at Corbin Hills, Brian Jones, Gary McNeely, David Dorsett and Lee Frick shot 131 to win Flight 1. Curt Thomas, Andy Lombard, Dale Plummer and Danny Crosby shot 138 to win Flight 2. Jeff Shirely, Bucky Bradley, Luke Thomas and Linda Whitley won Flight 3 with a 151. Doug Thomas, Trey Ledbetter, Mark Dobbins and Jerry Harveil shot 164 to win Flight 4.

Plummer won two skins, while Dorsett won one.

The next Dogfight is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 17, at 11 a.m.

South football seats

It’s time to gear up for the 2013 South Rowan Raiders football season. Returning reserved seat ticket holders will have first option to purchase their tickets again through Aug. 8 in the main office (no Fridays) from 11-1 or 6-8 p.m. If these dates are not convenient, please contact Angie Chrismon at 704-640-8640.

Five regular-season home games are included in the $35 price.

Remaining seats will go on sale to the general public beginning Saturday, Aug. 10 at 6 p.m. in the stadium during “Meet the Raiders” picture day.

Legion regional

The Southeast Regional tournament begins at Asheboro’s McCrary Park on Thursday.

Randolph County Post 45 is the host team for the event, and N.C. champion Wilmington Post 10 also is in the field.

Other state champions are Jacksonville, Fla., Rockdale, Ga., Bessemer, Ala., Irmo-Chapin, S.C., and Albemarle, Va.

The Kentucky championship was still being determined on Sunday.

Minor leagues

The Kannapolis Intimidators won 4-3 against Hagerstown on Sunday.

Michael Recchia (5-0) pitched seven strong innings for Kannapolis.

Kannapolis had 10 hits, including two each by Tim Anderson, Mike Marjama and Nick Basto.

• Justin Seager (NW Cabarrus) had two doubles and two RBIs on Sunday.

Seager is batting .253 for the Everett AquaSox. He has three homers and 19 RBIs in 40 games.

• Corey Seager (NW Cabarrus) has earned a promotion. The L.A. Dodgers have moved the 19-year-old from Class A ball to Advanced A. Seager is now with the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes of the California League.

A 6-foot-4 shortstop, Seager batted .309 with 12 homers and 18 doubles in 74 Class A Midwest League games with the Great Lakes Loons.

Seager is ranked No. 16 on the prospect list of ESPN’s Keith Law.

Seager batted .309 in rookie ball last season.
