Former Catawba slugger Jerry Sands has started to swing the bat well at Triple A Indianapolis.

Sands hit a grand slam Monday and homered again Tuesday, so he has three homers in his last four games after hitting none in his first 39.

He’s still batting just .186, but he’s at .294 in his last 10 games. Sands has 17 RBIs, with eight of those in his last six games.

• Daniel Wagner (South Rowan) had a big game on May 19, going 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs in Double A. Wagner is batting .293.

Junior Legion

West Rowan Junior Legion rolled 11-4 against Mocksville on Tuesday.

College track

USC Upstate’s Ross Oden (East Rowan) was named to the Atlantic Sun All-Academic team for outdoor track.

Oden finished his junior year with a 3.404 GPA as a chemistry major.

Oden placed fourth in the 10,000 meters in the Atlantic Sun Championships.

He ran season bests of 31:33.80 in the 10k and 15:05.43 in the 5k.

Local golf

Sixty GARS members played in foursomes at Lexington Golf Club.

Low ‘A’ Flight winner with a net of 65.67 was Ralph Brown. Low ‘B’ Flight winner with a net of 65.27 was Bert Bollinger. Low ‘C’ Flight player with a net of 66.24 was Ken Miller. Low ‘D’ Flight winner with a net of 68.15 was Harold Caudill.

Youth basketball

The North Carolina Phenoms basketball team won the 13U AAU state championship held in Greensboro.

The Phenoms went 4-0 in the tournament and are 25-2 this season. The Phenoms, who alos won the USBA state championship in Raleigh, have qualified for the national championships to be held in July.

Intimidators baseball

West Virginia got two homers from Stetson Allie and pounded Kannapolis 9-3 on Tuesday.

Micah Johnson and Michael Johnson had two hits each for the Intimidators.
