Bowling Classic Saturday fights hunger

Woodleaf Lanes will host the second annual Food for Thought Bowling Classic on Saturday beginning at noon.

The competition will feature four-person teams in categories for young children, older children, families and even corporations and organizations. All child and family teams will bowl from 12 to 2 p.m. Adult and corporate teams will bowl from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.

Child and family teams are $60 for four bowlers, adult teams are $100 and lane sponsorships are available for $150. Each team will have their own lane.

Participants can register online at, or on the organization’s Facebook page.

Food for Thought is a community backpack program that sends Rowan/Salisbury school children from food-insecure families home with easy-to-prepare meals at the end of each school week.

“The need is clear. Some of your children’s classmates are going to bed hungry at night,” said Amy Goodnight, executive director of Food for Thought. “The statistics are scary. More than one-in-five households are classified as ‘food-insecure,’ by the USDA. One-in-four children in Rowan County live in poverty.”

Food for Thought serves students at Cleveland, Granite Quarry, Hanford-Dole, Knollwood, Koontz, North Rowan, Overton, Shive and Woodleaf elementary schools. A pilot program was started this year for sixth-grade students at Knox Middle School as well.
