Dean and Lori Ewart of Salisbury are pleased to announce the engagement of their son, Derek Ray Ewart, to Ms. Kaitlyn Michelle Sylvester, daughter of Robert and Kimberly Sylvester of Raleigh.

The bride-elect’s maternal grandparents are Jack and Harriet Burkel and the late James C. Pennington. Her paternal grandparents are Robert and Judy Sylvester and the late Virginia F. Sylvester. A 2006 graduate of Sanderson High School in Raleigh, Miss Sylvester received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2010. She is currently a pediatric nurse employed at Duke Hospital.


Mr. Ewart’s maternal grandparents are Jerry and Deanna Upright of Salisbury and the late Cecil R. Deal. His paternal grandparents are Jacqueline Ewart of Rockwell and the late Calvin S. Ewart. A 2006 graduate of Salisbury High School, he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2010. He is currently studying at the North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine.

Derek and Kaitlyn are planning a wedding at the Outer Banks of North Carolina in Nags Head on May 26.
