Salisbury Police charged a North Long Street man with cocaine possession after officers found a small crack rock hidden inside a purse.

Stanley Wayne Caviness, 35, of the 200 block of North Long Street, was the passenger in a vehicle that was stopped because police say the driver was driving at night without burning his headlights. The incident occurred Saturday just before 9 p.m. near East Innes and Depot streets. The driver told the officer they were headed to Sonic Drive-In. The driver was not charged.

Caviness was charged with felony possession of a schedule II controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The officer had a police drug walk around the vehicle. The dog alerted on the passenger’s side. Caviness told the officer he had a crack pipe under his seat.

The officer searched the vehicle and found a red purse that had a pill bottle with a white powder residue, a small crack rock, a “push rod” cloth (used to push the drugs into the pipe), a lighter and a key ring.

Caviness was placed in the Rowan County Detention Center under a $2,500 secured bond and has since been released. Caviness was convicted of drug possession, breaking and entering, driving while license revoked and maintaing a dwelling place for a controlled substance.
