Carson and West Rowan won NPC baseball games on Tuesday and now are tied for first with 3-1 league records.

Carson won 5-0 against West Iredell behind Dillon Atwell’s two-hitter.

Atwell (3-1) struck out five and walked none.

Greg Tonnesen produced two run-scoring singles for the Cougars (8-2). Austin McNeill drove in two runs with a double and a groundout.

• West Rowan rolled 11-1 in five innings against North Iredell. The Falcons (9-1) got strong pitching from lefty Justin Evans (3-1).

Cody McNeely, Taylor Garczynski and Michael Pinkston had two hits each. Pinkston and Garczysnki had two RBIs apiece.

West plays at Carson on Friday in a key matchup.

• Davie County only got two hits, but it pieced together a big sixth inning with walks, errors and HBPs and beat Mount Tabor 4-3 in its CPC opener.

Jeremy Walker pitched a complete game, fanned four and held the Spartans to five hits.

Nick Boswell and Nathan Howard had the only hits for the War Eagles (7-1).

• North Rowan’s YVC game at South Stanly was postponed until tonight, and the Lexington-North game was moved back to Thursday.

• Northwest Cabarrus pounded Robinson 14-2 in SPC baseball on Tuesday.

Tyler Thomas pitched a complete game. Justin Dixon knocked in six runs. Dixon and Tanner Bigham had two hits.

• Ryan McIntyre pitched a no-hitter for East Davidson in a 10-0 win against Lexington.

Prep softball

East Rowan won 6-1 against South Rowan on Tuesday.

Beth Ann Martin drove in Caroline Hubbard with South’s run.

• Carson lost 6-1 to West Iredell on Tuesday.

Sidney Grkman had a double for the Cougars, who lost for the first time. Morgan Peninger had two hits.

• West Rowan lost 7-5 to North Iredell in an NPC game on Tuesday.

Cat Whitley and Taylor Martin had two hits each for the Falcons, and Kailey Anglin knocked in two runs.

Payton York and Lacey Fox had two RBIs each for North Iredell.

• Davie thumped Mount Tabor 17-4 in CPC action on Tuesday. Caroline Miller held the Spartans to one hit.

Miller drove in five runs, and Sarah Myers went 4-for-4. Lauren Taylor and Morgan Hendrix had three hits each.

• North Rowan lost 8-2 to South Stanly in YVC play on Tuesday.

Taylor Sells had two hits for the Cavaliers and struck out seven in the circle.

Prep girls soccer

Carson lost 2-1 to West Iredell in overtime in an NPC matchup on Tuesday.

Cierra Josey scored the goal for Carson, and Alex Allen was oustanding in goal.

Prep boys tennis

Salisbury won 9-0 against South Rowan on Tuesday.

Brock Overcash, Clint Comadoll, Chris Derrick, David Derrick, Spencer Storey and Hunter Carlton won singles matches.

Overcash-Comadoll, Derrick-Derrick and Storey-Carlton were the doubles winners.

• East Rowan won 5-4 against Statesville in NPC play on Tuesday.

Justin Allen, Evan Rogers, Chance Brown and Timmy Kane took singles matches for the Mustangs. Kane-Anthony Morrow pulled out a pivotal 8-6 match at No. 3 doubles.

College baseball

Catawba split a doubleheader with Shippensburg Tuesday at Newman Park. Catawba won the opener 6-2, but the Raiders took the nightcap 14-4.

In the opener, the Indians (22-8) grabbed a 4-0 lead with Garrett Furr, Julio Zubillaga (Carson) and Cameron Beard driving in runs.

John J. Tuttle (A.L. Brown) got the win on the mound. Ryan McClintock threw a scoreless seventh inning to close it out.

Shippensburg scored six runs in the third in the nightcap and capitalized on two Catawba errors. Pat Kregloh had a three-run homer to push the Raiders’ lead to 10-1.

• Catawba’s Nick Lomascolo was named SAC Pitcher of the Week. Lomascolo pitched right innings in a win against Lenoir-Rhyne and struck out 11. He won his school-record 32nd game and is 6-1 this season. He leads the SAC with 59 strikeouts and is third with a 1.89 ERA.

• Caleb Henley (East Rowan) threw a scoreless inning of relief as UNC Greensboro beat N.C. State 8-5 on Tuesday.

• Nathan Fulbright (East) had three RBIs as Guilford beat Lynchburg 7-5 Tuesday.

College softball

Pfeiffer’s Ashlee Ellen is the Conference Carolinas Softball Player of the Week.

She batted .615.

College women’s golf

Appalachian State’s Lauren Smith (Salisbury) shot 74-80-74 in the Ocala Spring Invitational and tied for 18th.

ASU’s Lily Yatawara (Salisbury) shot 82-88-80.

•Catawba finished 12th in the Wingate Pinehurst Invitational.

Catawba’s Madison Kennedy (Salisbury) shot a pair of 80s and finished 15th.

Middle school soccer

Southeast’s boys defeated Corriher-Lipe 10-1. Michael Rosas and Faunel Vasquez both scored three goals each. Luis Araujo scored twice while Daniel Carrillo and Ahmed Mustafic tallied goals.

• Southeast’s girls defeated Corriher-Lipe 3-2 Tuesday. Farrah Jordan had a hat trick for Southeast, and Sarah Musselwhite, Jessica Ferrioloi and Zinia Figueroa had assists. Ally Wilhelm stopped a penalty kick in goal.

Razorbacks tryouts

The Rowan Razorbacks travel baseball team will hold an open tryout for their 9U and 10U teams Saturday aand Sunday, March 23 and 24, at the 8th Street Ballpark in Spencer.

Tryouts both days are at 4 p.m.

Registration at J.F. Hurley YMCA for spring soccer (ages 3-14) and flag football (ages 4-14) runs through March 31.

Cornhole tournament

A cornhole tournament is being held at Carson on Saturday, March 23. The event is being held to raise money for several girls basketball players who will be making a mission trip to the Dominican Republic over spring break.

Registration is at noon. The tournament starts at 1 p.m. The cost is $10.

Local racing

Taylor Stricklin (West Rowan) will compete in the NASCAR Whelen All-American and UARA series. His first race will be Hickory Motor Speedway on March 23.

Stricklin is the son of Hut Stricklin and grandson of Donnie Allison.

Stricklin’s No. 7 car will be sponsored by a non-profit. Fans are encouraged to go to the Taylor Stricklin Racing facebook page to vote for the charity they’d like to see around the track this season.

The charity will have placement on the race car and a portion of proceeds from memorabilia sales also will go to that organization.
