A Salisbury man was charged with drug possession during a traffic checkpoint along U.S. 52 late Sunday.

Aaron Kyle Yarborough, 22, of Sides Road, is charged with simple possession of marijuana, possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and driving while license revoked, a Rowan County Sheriff’s Office report said.

Deputy N.L. Phillips was assisting in the checkpoint at OC Pine Drive, just off U.S. 52, at 11:10 p.m. when a driver told the officer he was pulling over because he knew he had no license, the report said.

The officer noticed the smell of marijuana and asked the driver if he had any illegal substances. The report said, Yarborough pulled out a plastic bottle from his pants pocket which had a few grams of marijuana inside. As Yarborough was getting out of his vehicle, he placed a digital scale on the roof of his car. Officers found one and a half hydrocodone pills inside Yarborough’s pocket and a packet of rolling papers.

Yarborough was placed under a $5,000 secured bond and has since been released from the Rowan County Detention Center. Yarborough has previously been convicted in Rowan County of drug possession in 2010, 2011 and most recently in November in Cabarrus County. He was also convicted of driving while impaired and carrying a concealed weapon.
