NAMI Rowan is starting a new Family 2 Family class, sponsored by the Hefner VA Medical Center of Salisbury.

NAMI stands for the National Alliance on Mental Illness. Its mission is to promote recovery and optimize the quality of life for those people affected by mental illness.

The new Family 2 Family class will meet from 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m., beginning Saturday at Building 6 on the VA Medical Center campus. There is no charge.

The class runs 12 weeks and will help family members, battle buddies and friends to learn what their loved ones are going through, whether it involves depression, post-traumatic stress, bi-polar issues or more. All mental illnesses are addressed.

The class looks into how to spot trigger points and what role medicine plays.

Peggy Mangold, president of NAMI Rowan, says, “We are here for you, and everything is confidential. ... Mental illness is a disease, just like cancer or diabetes, and we are tryig to get rid of the stigma that so many people have to face.

“It affects not only the person with the illness but the whole family, the community.”
