Editorial: New menu for baseball fans

You know the world is changing when the local baseball park offers a Healthy Choices Menu.

That’s what is going on this spring at CMCNorthEast Stadium, home of the Kannapolis Intimidators. In partnership with the Cabarrus Health Alliance, the Intimidators are selling nutritious entrees such as grilled chicken sandwiches, turkey wraps, veggie burgers and salads. Snacks include yogurt, fruit, granola bars, harvest blend nuts and more.

Randy Long, general manager of the Intimidators, looks at the menu additions as a way of giving people what they want. “Whether parents are trying to make sure their kids eat right or a fan just wants something lighter to eat, we want to be able to cater to them,” he said.

The Intimidators, the Health Alliance and the city of Kannapolis are even teaming up for four Get Healthy nights on June 5, June 26, July 17 and Aug. 14. Fans who complete five pushups or 10 jumping jacks will get into the ballgame at half price. Items on the Healthy Choices Menu will be discounted, and prizes will go to the winners of exercise events to be held throughout the game.

This could be looked at as someone trying to push a health-conscious agenda, or as a matter of keeping up with the times. Fit is in.

Fear not, traditionalists. The concession stand will still offer hot dogs, beer and other typical fare. Now you and your friends will simply have more choices — and more chances to eat well.
