Animal shelter task force meets Thursday

The Rowan County Animal Shelter Task Force will meet Thursday for the second of what’s scheduled to be three meetings.

The meeting will be at 5 p.m in the first floor conference room of the Rowan County Administration Building, 130 West Innes St. in Salisbury.

During the task force’s first meeting, in late April, members focused attention on three areas — a volunteer program, an increase in the adoption fee to pay for vaccinations and software to aide in the animal shelter’s operations.

Commissioner Craig Pierce during the first meeting said the task force would pick specific areas to focus on and draft recommendations to present to the full Rowan County Board of Commissioners. Pierce is serving in a chairman role on the task force, but no formal chairman has been selected. County commissioners chose Pierce to be their liaison to the task force.

Pierce during the first meeting said the second of three meetings would be to start developing a set of recommendations to make to the Board of Commissioners, which would ultimately have to approve any suggestions made by the task force. Any policy changes that involve money would have to be approved before June to be included in commissioners’ budget discussions.
