Area Sports Briefs: Harris debuts; Corey homers again

Mitch Harris, who has family in Salisbury, made his major league debut  with the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday.

Harris, 29, served five years of active duty in the U.S. Navy following his graduation from the Naval Academy. He pitched 1 1/3 innings, allowing two hits, two walks and one strikeout. He struck out the first batter he faced.

• Seattle third baseman Kyle Seager (NW Cabarrus) is batting .288 with two homers and nine RBIs.

• Bobby Parnell (East Rowan) will be shut down for a week due to forearm soreness.

 Coming back from Tommy John surgery, Parnell’s velocity has been down some and he’s allowed six hits and three walks in 2 2/3 innings in three relief appearances with St. Lucie.

• Jerry Sands (Catawba) is 8-for-21 with four RBIs since being recalled to the majors by the Cleveland Indians.

• Jordan Jankowski (Catawba) is in Triple-A. A 34th-round pick in 2012, the 25-year-old right-hander has made eight relief appearances for the Fresno Grizzlies (Astros) and is 1-0 with a 1.86 ERA and 10 strikeouts.

• Whit Merrifield (Davie) is batting .310 for the Omaha Storm Chasers, Kansas City’s Triple A team.

• Corey Seager (NW Cabarrus) smacked his fourth homer for Double-A Tulsa (Dodgers) on Saturday. The 20-year-old prospect has 14 RBIs and is batting .433.

• The Kannapolis Intimidators won 4-3 at Hickory in South Atlantic League action on Saturday.

• Justin Seager (NW Cabarrus) is off to a slow start with the Bakersfield Blaze (Mariners) in advanced Class A ball. Seager is 5-for-30 with three RBIs.

Thad Lowry pitched six strong innings for his third win without a loss. Eddie Alvarez hit his first homer of the season. Alvarez and Mason Robbins had two hits each.

• Chris Dula (Catawba) has a win and a save in five relief appearances for the Hickory Crawdads (Rangers).

• Nick Lomascolo (Catawba) has allowed one run in five relief appearances for the Peoria Chiefs (Cardinals). A 34th-round draft pick in 2013, Lomascolo, 24, has struck out 15 batters in nine innings.
