Christmas Happiness: Local couple give in honor of best friends

Dick and Pennie Martin have been giving to the Christmas Happiness Fund for more than a decade, but this year the husband and wife decided to give in honor of two of their best friends.
more than 10 years.

The couple gave in honor of their friends Phillip Burgess and his partner Daryl, whom they’ve known for about 17 years.

“Phillip is the choir director at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church and they are two of our very best friends,” said Dick Martin.

He said Phillip and Daryl have done a lot in the community and he and his wife felt they deserved some recognition. Phillip returned to the church and has known Phillip and Daryl since that time.
Dick said he and his wife continue to give to the Christmas Happiness Fund because it helps local families in need.

“I think this is something that is local and that is good,” he said.
The donations to the Christmas Happiness Fund come from people in the community who earmark their gift in memory or honor of someone. Donations are brought to the Salisbury Post during business hours. The money is then given to the Salvation Army of Rowan County to distribute to eligible families. The following donations were given:
