Letter: What happens to plastic bags ‘recycled’ at stores?

Published 8:24 pm Monday, April 16, 2018

Recently when checking out of a local Food Lion, the cashier divided my nine small items into three bags. I re-bagged and set the bag I didn’t need on top of the other blue ones hanging by the cashier.  She proceeded to throw the new bag into the waste basket. I told her that it was a new bag even though she witnessed what I had done. She said, “We throw them all away.”

I then asked her “What happens with the plastic bags deposited in the recycling containers outside in front of the store”?  She said they all go in the trash.  So either she didn’t know or Food Lion really does just throw our recycled bags in the trash.

I have emailed Food Lion twice to get the correct information & have heard nothing.  Are we wasting our time by returning our plastic bags to Food Lion?    Better yet, should we just bring our own reusable bags if we care about the environment?
