Area Sports Briefs: Salisbury soccer wins again

Salisbury soccer improved to 12-6-2 overall and 11-5-1 in the Central Carolina Conference with a 4-1 victory over the visiting Black Knights of North Davidson on Tuesday.
The game was postponed from Monday due to weather conditions.
Salisbury came out slowly but capitalized on a defensive miscue in the seventh minute as Tony Figueroa beat keeper Aldolfo Bedolla unassisted to make it 1-0.
Melvin Bonilla doubled the lead five minutes later on an assist from Jack Fisher.
North Davidson converted a penalty kick to cut Salisbury’s lead to 2-1 at the break.
In the second half, it was senior super sub Kevin Ochoa , who recorded a brace to seal the victory.
The first goal was arguably one of SHS’s best of the year as Eriq Argrett beat a defender and crossed a beautiful diagonal ball that Ochoa banged home to make it 3-1.
The final goal came on yet another assist from Jack Fisher as Ochoa finished with his left foot.
Next up for SHS is the regular-season finale at South Rowan tonight. The jayvees play at 5:30, with the varsity starting at 7.

Prep golf
Rockingham County won the 3A title with a score of 455. Northern Guilford (491) was second and Cox Mill (513) third.
East Rowan’s Camryn Corriher shot 88-95 – 183 and tied for 35th. East’s Carmen Fraley shot 100-103 — 203 and tied for 59th.
Sophie Morello led Cox Mill. She shot 85-81 — 166 and was 14th.

Currituck won the 1A/2A state title at Longleaf Golf and Country Club with a team total of 551.
Gray Stone’s Lauren Denhard shot 88-90 — 178 and was 17th. Gray Stone’s Annika Kuleba shot 91-92 — 183 and was 19th.
Olivia Sharpe shot 88-83 — 169 to tie for seventh. She led West Davidson to a third-place finish.

Raleigh Cardinal Gibbons won the 4A state championship by seven shots over Pinecrest.
Davie County’s Brookelynne Sornig shot 95-87 — 182 and finished 64th.
Prep tennis
Carson lost at Concord, 9-0, in the second round of the 3A dual team state playoffs.
Maci Cooper came the closest to winning for Carson. She lost in a third-set tiebreaker.
Prep volleyball
West Rowan put up a fight but lost at North Iredell 25-22, 25-17, 24-26 and 25-19 in the second round of the 3A state playoffs on Tuesday.
West finished 20-7, with four of the losses to top-seeded North Iredell.

South Rowan also lost to a top seed, falling at West Iredell 25-16, 25-14 and 25-11 in the second round of the 2A state playoffs.
South finished 19-8.
Kira Rimer had 10 digs and nine kills. Janiya Downs had nine kills and nine digs. Jenna Strickland had 12 digs. Michaela Hallman had 14 assists.
Macy Pope dished out 45 assists for the Warriors, who will play Pisgah next.
Mid. school football
China Grove won against Corriher-Lipe, 24-0 in 8th-grade football.
Aiden Kirchbaum scored on a 47-yard run. Nathan Chrismon scored on a 3-yard run, and Owen Blackwelder scored on a 3-yard pass from Chrismon. Jacob Ritchie kicked two PATs. Daniel Cuevas kicked one.
Defensive standouts for the Red Devils were Chrismon, Ritchie, Hector Bernal, Keison Tillman and Max Bradshaw with a fumble recovery.
China Grove’s 7th and 8th grade teams both finished with 5-2 records.

Knox won against North Rowan Middle, 20-8.
JyMikaah Wells had three touchdowns, scoring on runs of 3, 30 and 45 yards. He also had a sack and a fumble recovery.
Jamecia Huntley had a 2-point conversion on a pass from CJ Toomer. Toomer also had a 30-yard run on the first play of the game and an interception. Nicklas Tilman forced a fumble. Amare Johnson had strong runs.
Anthony Dodd had a fumble recovery, a sack and several tackles. Jamecia Huntley, Dominic Wallac and Nicholas Flack also helped lead the defense.
College golf
COLONIAL HEIGHTS, VA – Livingstone College senior Philip Harrison finished second overall at the Trojan Fall Classic at the Dogwood Chase Golf Course in Colonial Heights, VA, with a four-over 147.
For the second straight day, the Blue Bears posted a team score of 307 in the nine-team field to finish second with a score of 613 on the par-72 6,605-yard course.
Alex Stuart shot five-over 72 on Tuesday to finish with a score of 152. Michael Sutton shot 152 to tie Stuart, followed by Marcus Thompson (165), Harry Stanberry, Jr., (166) and Lenorris Williams III shot (164) as an individual.
Virginia Union edged out the Blue Bears with a team score 603.

George Mason’s Eric Edwards (Salisbury) shot 67-70-69 — 206 and tied for second at 7-under in the ODU/OBX Intercollegiate.
College swimming
Queens swimmers Paul Pijulet and McKenzie Stevens (Salisbury) are the Bluegrass Mountain Conference Male and Female Swimmers of the Week
The seniors led Queens in competition this past weekend against NCAA Division I programs in the Virginia Tech Spring Challenge.
Stevens was one of two Royals to tally a win in the event, taking first place in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:01.11. She also collected two runner-up finishes in the 100-yard freestyle race and in the 100-yard butterfly.
