SALISBURY — Rowan authorities say an online disagreement between two East Rowan High students escalated when the two fought at school and one of them was choked until the point of unconsciousness.

The fight occurred between two males, a 15-year-old and a 16-year-old, who fought during lunch on Wednesday, said Rowan County Sheriff’s spokesman John Sifford.

“One of the students did put a choke hold on the other, and the student did pass out,” he said.

The student did require medical treatment on site, Sifford said.

There were no weapons involved, Sifford said, and at present the students have not been charged. However, the school resource officer is consulting with the Rowan County District Attorney’s Office.

No other students were involved and it is believed the students were suspended.

“The disagreement started on Facebook, with threats made back and forth between the two. It appears both involved made derogatory comments about the other,” he said.

The matter was handled by the SRO assigned to the school and school administrators.
