WASHINGTON ó Taking full control of Georgetownís offense, Hollis Thompson and Jason Clark combined to make the teamís first 12 baskets on Monday night and finished with a total of 36 points, leading the Hoyas to an 86-45 victory over North Carolina-Greensboro.
Thompson, the Hoyasí only junior, made 5 of 6 3-point attempts and scored 19 points. Clark, one of only two seniors, had all 17 of his points by halftime, when Georgetown (2-0) led 41-16.
Markel Starks added 11 points, all in the second half, as Georgetown heads into its Nov. 21 game against 12th-ranked Kansas in the Maui Invitational.
UNC Greensboro (0-2), of the Southern Conference, started last season 0-15. Trevis Simpson led the Spartans with 11 points.
Once the margin got above 40 points in the second half, the Hoyas rested Clark and Thompson and other starters and went mainly with newcomers.
UCONN 78, WAGNER 56
STORRS, Conn. ó Shabazz Napier scored 21 points and No. 4 Connecticut extended Division Iís longest winning streak to 13 games with a 78-66 victory over Wagner on Monday night.
Jeremy Lamb added 20 points and seven rebounds for the Huskies (2-0), who have never lost a game at Gampel Pavilion during the months of November or December.
Latif Rivers scored 11 points and Tyler Murray added 10, all in the first half, for Wagner (1-1).
After outrebounding Columbia by just two and being outrebounded 20-10 on the offensive end in their season opener, the Huskies made crashing the boards a point of emphasis in this one. They outrebounded Wagner 42-24, including 18-11 on the offensive end.
FLORIDA ST. 73, UCF 50
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. ó Florida Stateís Bernard James has been known mostly for his defense and shot-blocking skills. That may be changing.
The 6-foot-10 James had 18 points and 11 rebounds ó career-highs in both ó on Monday while notching his fifth career double-double to lead the 25th-ranked Seminoles to a 73-50 victory over Central Florida.
ěHis length bothered us on the defensive end as well as his ability now to score,î UCF coach Donnie Jones said. ěIt makes him a two-headed monster.î
James had 14 points and eight rebounds in the second half.
ěHeís only getting better and better,î Jones said. ěHe was terrific.î
The former Air Force sergeant had three blocked shots and could have had more points if not for missing six of eight free throws.
G. TECH 70, DELAWARE ST. 52
DULUTH, Ga. ó Sophomores Daniel Miller and Kammeon Holsey are flourishing as the key inside players for Georgia Tech in first-year coach Brian Gregoryís offense.
Miller had his first career double-double and Holsey had a career-high 21 points to lead Georgia Tech to a 70-52 win over Delaware State on Monday night.
Miller (6-11, 258) matched his career high with 14 points and set new highs with 15 rebounds and six assists. Holsey made 9 of 10 shots from the field.
ěTo be honest with you itís new, feeding the post with those guys,î Gregory said before adding he plans to keep the two in prominent roles, no matter what defense the Yellow Jackets face.
ěWe want to do that a lot, man or zone,î Gregory said.
ALABAMA 74, OAKLAND 57
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. ó JaMychal Green scored 18 points to lead No. 16 Alabama to a 74-57 victory over Oakland on Monday night.
Trevor Releford added 14 points for the Crimson Tide (2-0), while Tony Mitchell had 12 and Trevor Lacey 10. Mitchell had nine rebounds and four assists.
Reggie Hamilton led Oakland (0-1) with 16 points, all in the first half. Drew Valentine had 11 points and Laval Lucas-Perry added 10 for the Golden Grizzlies. Corey Petros had seven rebounds.
Alabama won its 22nd straight game at Coleman Coliseum, the sixth-longest home winning streak in the nation.
With the score tied 13-13 at the 14:45 mark, Alabama went on a 28-15 run to make it 41-28 on a layup by Green with 34 seconds left in the first half. A steal and a layup by Valentine just before the buzzer made it 41-30.
PURDUE 67, HIGH PT. 65
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. ó Ryne Smith scored a career-high 26 points to help Purdue hold off High Point 67-65 on Monday night.
Smith tied a school record with eight 3-pointers, a mark he now shares with Robbie Hummel and Cuonzo Martin. He also tied David Teagueís school record with 15 3-point attempts.
Hummel scored 18 points and Anthony Johnson added 13 for the Boilermakers (2-0), who won their 19th straight home game.
Nick Barbour missed a 3-pointer in the closing seconds that could have won the game for the Panthers (1-1). Barbour scored 17 points and Shay Shine added 14 for the Big South program, which finished with a 12-19 record last season.
IOWA 95, N.C. A&T 79
IOWA CITY, Iowa ó Melsahn Basabe had 15 points and 10 rebounds as Iowa defeated North Carolina A&T 95-79 Monday night.
Matt Gatens led Iowa (2-0) with 27 points and Eric May contributed 20 points and nine rebounds for the Hawkeyes (2-0).
Iowa scored the first 10 points of the second half, with the sophomore Basabe scoring six. A jumper from the Aggiesí A.J. Buck ended the streak after nearly four minutes.
A brief North Carolina A&T scoring run cut Iowaís lead from 25 to 14. Marc Hill and Nic Simpson connected after Hillís steal for an open 3-pointer. Anthony Estes hit a layup on the next possession and Buckís tip-in brought the Aggies as close as they would come in the second half.
Hill had 20 points to lead North Carolina A&T (0-2). The Aggies had 10 steals.
