Area briefs: Davie opens playoffs

Undefeated CPC champion Davie County is home tonight for the first two rounds of the 4A wrestling dual team state playoffs.
The War Eagles (32-0) wrestle South Caldwell at 6 p.m. High Point Central and Freedom are also wrestling at Davie. The Davie-South Caldwell winner takes on the Freedom-HP Central winner.
* In 2A, Ledford wrestles Owen and Central Davidson takes on Shelby in matches at Ledford.
* In 3A, Northwest Cabarrus wrestles R-S Central at Gastonia Huss. The other team at that venue is St. Stephens.
* At Enka, Lake Norman takes on Enka, while NPC champion Mooresville wrestles North Buncombe.
* SPC teams in the 3A playoffs are league champion Piedmont, Anson and Porter Ridge.
– 7th-grade hoops
North Rowan’s boys downed China Grove 58-27 Monday.
Mike Connor led the Mavericks with 21 points, while Michael Bowman scored 17.
Shawn Spry had 15 points for the Red Devils.
– North Hills basketball
North Hills defeated Hayworth Christian and Countryside Montessori Christian to win the Mid-state Conference tournament.
In a 40-35 semifinal victory against Hayworth, Abbey Lane had 19 points, and Laura Butner scored 15.
In a 34-29 win over Countryside in the championship game, Butner had 12 points and Lane nine.
Lane was tournament MVP and was joined by Butner on the all-conference team.
* Allison VonCanon scored 12 points as the North Hills elementary girls beat Statesville Montessori 20-18.
* The North Hills elementary school boys won 33-17 behind 17 points by Wes Fazia. Jay Wood added nine.
– Stallions hoops
The Cabarrus-Rowan Homeschool Stallions varsity girls edged Forsyth Home Edcucation 46-45.
Hannah Holm scored 20 points and had eight rebounds for the Stallions (12-5, 4-2). Nikki Milo scored 11 points.
* The Stallion middle school boys lost to Carolina International of Concord 47-35.
Brandon Adams scored 11 points for the Stallions, while Grant Stoller had eight.
– DCDS hoops
Harrison Baucom’s 3-pointer lifted Davidson Country Day to a 54-51 overtime win against Concord’s First Assembly.
Kenrick Jobe had 16 points and nine rebounds for the Diamondbacks (14-11). Celexus Long had nine points, Devin Perry had six rebounds, and Baucom had four steals.
* Jo Jo Chavis, Carleigh Ward and sisters Josie and Sydney Parker played well for DCDS in a 39-35 loss against First Assembly.
– Pfeiffer golf
Pfeiffer’s women were picked first in a preseason poll by Conference Carolinas coaches.
– College baseball
Montreat freshman Ryan Bostian (South Rowan) had his first two college hits on Saturday against Thomas.
– College indoor track
Charlotte shot putter Jake Deaton (Mooresville) was named A-10 Freshman of the Week. Deaton’s effort of 51 feet, 2 inches in the Carolina Classic was the longest in the A-10 so far this season.
– West Middle boosters
The West Rowan Middle athletic boosters meet today at 5:30 p.m. in the health room.
Topics will be trophy cases, the BBQ chicken dinner sale and the spring festival.
– GARS
Sixty-Seven GARS members played with a Captain’s Choice format at Corbin Hills on Monday.
Jim Bain, Don Bishop, Clarence Derrick and Carroll Downey shot minus-12 for first place.
Clive Mahaffey, Winsten Mahaffey, Don Martin and Guy Schenk finished at minus-9 and tied Larry Morris, Rudie Mounts, Gene Poplin and Vern Trexler for second place.
Bishop and Larry Luther won closest-to-pin honors, while Scott Miller had the longest putt on No. 9.
