Bush, Miles win gold at Clemson

Phillip Bush (North Rowan) won the long jump at the Clemson High School Invitational indoor track meet on Saturday with a leap of 23 feet, 2 inches.

Bush was busy and proficient. The North senior also was second in the 55-meter hurdles (7.56 seconds) and placed fourth in the 55-meter dash (6.65).

* Freshman pole vaulter Maverick Miles (South Rowan) cleared 14 feet to take first place. The mark broke South’s indoor record. Miles will compete in the National Scholastic Indoor Championships in New York City in March.

* Senior pole vaulter Makenzie Mullinax (South) followed Friday’s strong showing at East Tennessee State with a second-place finish at Clemson. Mullinax cleared 11 feet.

* Junior Olivia Jacobs (South) finished seventh in the 1600 in 5:41.79.

* Erica Reid (South) placed 13th in the 55-meter hurdles.

* Matt Stevenson (South) placed 17th in the shot put. Teammate Jordan Corriher was 20th.

College basketball

Freshman Sophilia Hipps (North Rowan) scored 18 points and had three assists for South Carolina State in Saturday’s 71-66 loss to Hampton.

* Tracey Croner (East Rowan) led Guilford in two losses with 15 points on Saturday and 14 points on Friday.

* Brittany Cornelius (East) scored 21 points for Meredith in Saturday’s 87-69 loss to Mary Baldwin.

* Allison Schafer (Davie County) scored 15 points for Mars Hill in a 90-78 victory over Tusculum.

* Michael Gore (South Rowan) had five points for Coker in Saturday’s 61-53 loss to Queens.

College wrestling

UNC Pembroke 141-pounder Aaron Hollifield (Davie County) placed third in the Apprentice School Invitational on Saturday.

College baseball

Mount Olive was voted No. 1 in the CVAC preseason baseball poll. The Trojans were followed by Erskine, Barton, Belmont Abbey, Limestone, Anderson, Pfeiffer, Coker and St. Andrews.

* Catawba opens Friday with a 6 p.m. game against Wingate at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium.

College football

Coastal Carolina coach David Bennett has agreed in principle to a five-year contract extension.

Bennett’s current contract runs for another three years. The proposed extension would keep him with the Chanticleers through 2015.

Catawba swimming

Catawba’s women’s swim team defeated Guilford and Sweet Briar in a meet held in Greensboro on Saturday.

Catawba’s Christine Ofslager won the 200 free (2:21.09) and 100 back (1:13.07), while Kira Capano took the 400 IM (5:34.41) and 100 free (1:05.29). Margeaux Doiron won the 100 fly (1:09.79) and 100 breaststroke (1:24.47).

Catawba’s Emily Daniels won the 50 free (30.35), and Leigh Spada won the 400 free (4:55.77). Spada, Ofslager, Capano and Doiron also combined to win the 400 free relay.

Middle school wrestling

Regular-season champion Erwin won the Rowan County Middle School Conference Tournament on Saturday at Knox.

North’s Josh Mock was named Most Outstanding Wrestler for the weights up to 135 pounds, while North’s Terry Allen was named Most Outstanding Wrestler for the upper weights.

Top-three finishers are in today’s Scoreboard.

Badboys wrestling

Landis’ Badboys AAU competition team is looking for middle school wrestlers in grades 6-8.

Middle school basketball tourney

The Rowan County Middle School basketball tournament resumes today at Corriher-Lipe. Southeast’s top-seeded girls take on No. 4 West Rowan Middle at 4:30 p.m., and Knox’s undefeated and top-seeded boys take on No. 5 China Grove at 6 p.m.

North Hills basketball

The North Hills varsity girls basketball team defeated Hayworth 37-22 on homecoming. Christina Gobble paced the Eagles with 11 points. Catherine Ardoin scored 10. Johanna Tansey scored nine.

* The North Hills varsity boys defeated Hayworth 73-31. Josh Richardson scored 24 points. Robert Powell and Travis Williams had 16 apiece.

Salisbury Academy basketball

Hannah Coulter scored 13 points to lead Salisbury Academy’s varsity girls basketball team to 26-8 victory over Hickory Christian. Alee Johnson and Carley Drye added seven points each for the Jaguars (13-4, 5-1), who are tied for first in their conference.

* Salisbury Academy’s varsity boys beat Hickory 30-18. Alan Lebowitz had eight points for the second-place Jaguars (13-4, 4-2).

Corbin Hills golf tournament

Stan Honeycutt shot a 31 on the back nine and led his team to first place in the Corbin Hills Men’s Golf Association’s first tournament of 2007.

Honeycutt’s partners were Jeff Shirley and Dale Plummer. Randy Bingham, Bob Whitley and Addison Smith finished second.

Rowan Little League sign-ups
