GIBSONVILLE — Rowan County’s American Legion team looked overmatched for most of Monday’s road game aginst Greensboro Post 53, but Rowan wound up winning it in 11 tense innings.

Rowan was no-hit until the top of the seventh, but still managed to rally.

Greensboro hurler Cameron Edmonds shut down Rowan’s offense for six innings, although Rowan managed to scratch out a run in the third to trail 5-1 going to the seventh.

Chandler Lippard’s double to open the seventh broke up the no-hitter. Daniel Durham made it two doubles in a row, and it was 5-2.

When the Greensboro first baseman couldn’t handle a hard-hit grounder by JT Fecteau, Rowan had two men on. Daniel Sell’s hit made it 5-3. Fecteau scored on a wild pitch to narrow the gap to 5-4. Jordan Goodine’s clutch hit made it 5-all.

Rowan starting pitcher Bryson Wagner walked five and walked in two runs, as Rowan fell into that early hole. Reliever Jonathan Spy allowed two runs.

But Rowan got some great bullpen work from Jake Davis, who stopped Greensboro in the seventh and eighth, and from Scout Nichols, who rolled through  the ninth,  10th and 11th to earn the win.

Rowan (1-1) missed some chances, but finally scored in the 11th after Goodine walked and stole second. When Steven Smith hit a ball into the hole, he was able to beat it out for an infield hit, and Goodine never stopped running. Goodine beat the throw to the plate for the run that proved decisive.

Fourteen Rowan batters fanned against Greensboro hurlers Edmonds and Bowen Young, but the bottom line was the first victory of the young season.

Rowan is off tonight before playing Concord at Mount Pleasant High on Wednesday night at 7 p.m.

Intimidators

KANNAPOLIS — Adam Hall hit a two-run single in the ninth inning, leading the Delmarva Shorebirds to a 4-3 win over the Kannapolis Intimidators on Monday.

The single by Hall scored Ryne Ogren and Robbie Thorburn and was the game’s last scoring play.

Nick Horvath hit a solo home run in the first inning to give the Shorebirds a 1-0 lead. The Intimidators came back to take the lead in the first inning when Romy Gonzalez hit an RBI single and then scored on a double by Luis Curbelo.

Kannapolis went up 3-2 in the third when Alex Destino hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Lenyn Sosa.

Ryan Conroy (1-1) got the win.

with three innings of scoreless, one-hit relief while Lane Ramsey (0-3) took the loss in the South Atlantic League game.

With the win, Delmarva improved to 9-1 against Kannapolis this season.
