Area Sports Briefs: South volleyball loses in CCC final; SHS soccer wins on Senior Night

South Rowan’s volleyball team lost in the Central Carolina Conference Tournament championship game on Wednesday.

Playing at Ledford, top-seeded South (21-5) easily won the first set against third-seeded West Davidson and held the lead late in the second set but couldn’t finish it off.

Down 24-21, West Davidson (21-6) scored five straight points to take the second set, and rolled from there.

“When we couldn’t get that one point, the air got knocked out of us.” South coach Jenna Horne told the Lexington Dispatch.

The Green Dragons won 14-25, 26-24, 25-14 and 25-12.

  Janiya Downs had 19 kills and 26 digs for the Raiders.Kira Rymer had 26 kills, 18 digs and 16 assists. Ashlyn Faw had 25 digs. Anna Rymer had 15 digs and 31 assists. Payton Black had 17 digs.

Ashley Johnson had 22 kills for the Green Dragons.

South, Ledford and West Davidson tied for the regular season championship.

South will have a playoff game on Tuesday.

  South Iredell won 25-23,  25-15, 19-25 and 25-23  against Statesville in a first-round NPC tournament game on Wednesday.

Taylor Osborne led the Vikings in kills with 16.

South Iredell will play West Rowan in a semifinal at 6:30 p.m. at Carson tonight.

Carson will play at 5 p.m. tonight against North Iredell.

High school tennis

Carson ended the season with a 5-4 loss at Mount Tabor in the first round of the 3A dual team state playoffs on Wednesday.

Singles winners for Carson  (10-3) were Jadyn Kirkpatrick, Alison Sloop and Keeley Watson.

The team of Carleigh Perry/Colbie Perry won in doubles for the Cougars.

High school soccer

Salisbury triumphed on Senior Night at Ludwig Stadium, 3-2, against East Davidson on Wednesday.

Salisbury celebrated the careers of 11 seniors (Josh Faulkner, Jack Fisher, William Austin, Luke Holland, Eriq Argrett, Spencer Blackwell, Tony Figueroa, Bryan Garcia Cortes, Arrawn Yang, David Holden, and Ronald Garrido) and pushed their overall record to 17-2-1 and 13-1-1 in the Central Carolina Conference.

All 11 seniors played the majority of the match with the exception of Holland, whose season is over due to a knee injury.

Holland took the field to start the match and played the opening kick off out of bounds, allowing for a proper fan and teammate send-off.

All goals and assists were recorded by seniors. Tony Figueroa, keeper Josh Faulkner, and Spencer Blackwell scored for the Hornets.

It was the first career goal for Blackwell, a three-year varsity defender.

Assists were credited to Fisher, Faulkner, and  Garcia Cortes.

Next up for SHS is a huge match Monday night against North Davidson. A win by the Hornets would clinch the CCC.

Over the course of  three-plus seasons, the 11 seniors are 71-14-9 overall and 41-7-3  in the CCC.

West Rowan lost to North Iredell, 4-1, on Wednesday in NPC action.

Alen Muskic scored the West goal, with Esteban Trujillo assisting.

West Rowan’s jayvees won against North Iredell, 3-1.

  West goals were by Johnny Hernandez, Davide Godaj and Salvador Bautista.  Assists were by Mitchell Reyna. Juan Guerrero and Joseph Turcios.

East Rowan lost to South Iredell, 5-2, in NPC varsity soccer on Wednesday, while Carson lost to Statesville, 2-0.

College soccer

HICKORY —  Catawba’s women dropped an important South Atlantic Conference match at Lenoir-Rhyne, 4-1, on Wednesday.

Maddie Peck netted Catawba’s only goal, unassisted, with 2:38 left in regulation.

Catawba is 11-3 and 5-3 in the SAC.

Early goals pushed Lenoir-Rhyne past Catawba’s men, 4-1, at Moretz Athletic Complex Wednesday.

Catawba fell to 2-10 and is is 0-8 in the SAC.

College basketball

Pfeiffer’s women’s basketball team was tabbed as the preseason USA South East Division favorite.

The Falcons will tip off the season on Nov. 10 when they travel to Randolph College.

  

Local golf

In the McCanless Ladies Golf Association Invitational, Mary Seaford and Azalee Huneyctt took first place in the Championship Flight.

Faye Cline and Kristi Laton took second.

In the First Flight,  Susan Kurz Wydner and Cindy Carmazzi won, with Bev Cobb and Eileen Full taking second.

Salisbury Academy

The Salisbury Academy girls varsity tennis team won its final match of the season to finish with an unblemished record of 7-0.

Leading the way in singles for the Jaguars were Lucy Barr, Millie Wymbs, Kate Burton, Cora Wymbs, Lanie Humble and Quinn Davidson in singles.

In doubles, the team of Lucy Barr and Millie Wymbs came back to win, 6-5,  while Ruby Walser and Elizabeth Applewhite were victorious as well as the combo of Peyton Hollar and Kari Downs.

The team will look to continue the streak into the coed spring season in 2019.

Mid. school football

Erwin defeated Southeast, 28-12, on Wednesday.

Evan Porter scored two TDs for the Eagles.   Tijhon Everhart and Christian Chalk also scored TDs.

The defense for the Eagles caused a fumble and made an interception.

The Eagles will travel to China Grove on Monday  for a 4 p.m. kickoff.

North Hills

North Hills Christian School went undefeated in all regular season cross country meets and also won the SPAA Conference Met.

Individual honors were given to   Triston Rabon (6th grade) and Jill Boger (7th), who placed 1st in the boys and girls divisions.

Schools in the Southern Piedmont Athletic Association  who competed in the conference final with North Hills were Hickory Christian Academy, Statesville Christian School, United Faith Christian Academy, Victory Christian Center School and the Woodlawn School.

Hurley YMCA
