High school softball roundup: Mustangs, Falcons, Raiders, Hornets win tourney games

GRANITE QUARRY — East Rowan pitcher Madi Tigert shut down Lake Norman Charter as the top-seeded Mustangs won handily, 9-0, in the first round of the South Piedmont Conference Tournament.

East (20-2) got three hits from Eleni Miller and two each from Tigert, Chloe Shank and Gracie Barber.

East advanced to play Central Cabarrus (at West Rowan) in a Tuesday semifinal. The fourth-seeded Vikings (14-9) advanced with a 7-4 win against Northwest Cabarrus.

MOUNT ULLA — West Rowan socked three more homers and cruised to a 14-4 win against Carson in five innings to advance to the semifinals of the South Piedmont Conference Tournament.

The Falcons scored five times in the first inning and led 12-0 after three.

The second-seeded Falcons (18-4) got homers from Reese Poole, Raney Phelps and EA Nance. Poole walloped her 10th of the season and is batting .493.

Phelps went 4-for-4. Taylor Keller drove in four runs with three hits. Nance had three hits and three RBIs.

Arabelle Shulenburger smacked two doubles and was the winning pitcher with 10 strikeouts.

Jimmy Greene logged his 199th victory as head coach of the Falcons.

Abigail Harrelson had a homer and two RBIs for the seventh-seeded Cougars. Caroline Snow had two RBIs.

Carson finished the season 5-15.

LANDIS — Third-seeded South Rowan beat sixth-seeded Concord 8-2 in a first round game in the South Piedmont Conference Tournament.

South (14-6) put together a seven-run third to take charge.

Freshman pitcher Remi Hagerty struck out seven with no walks.

Eva Shue and Kynlee Dextraze had three hits each and both had two doubles.

Leisha Carter has gotten hot lately and had two more hits. She had a double and two RBIs.

Nora Wheeler also drove in two runs.

South has won six of its last seven games.

SALISBURY — Salisbury destroyed Lexington 17-0 in a first-round game in the Central Carolina Conference Tournament.

The fourth-seeded Hornets (10-10) scored six runs in the first and 11 in the second to end the fifth-seeded  Yellow Jackets’ season. Lexington was 1-12.

Emma Blackwell had a homer and three RBIs for the Hornets. Tijah Sims had two hits, including a homer. Ashley Yang had a triple and two RBIs. Dasmine Ambers had a triple, while Allie Peeler had three hits, including a double.

Peeler and Teashia Ellis scored three runs each.

Yang struck out five in the shortened game and allowed one hit.

The Hornets will take on No. 1 seed West Davidson in a Tuesday semifinal (at East Davidson).

TROUTMAN — South Iredell beat A.L. Brown 13-3 in a first-round game in the Greater Metro Conference Tournament.

The fourth-seeded Vikings (13-10) scored 11 runs in the first two innings.

Isabella Butler had two RBIs for the fifth-seeded Wonders (9-9-1). Madyson Baker had two hits.

The Wonders have lost five of their last six, but it looks like they’ll be in the state playoffs. They are 26th in the 4A West RPI rankings. South Iredell is 16th.
