College baseball: Smith ends season among SAC leaders

EMORY, Va. — Emory & Henry’s baseball team closed the season on Sunday, ending a terrific senior season for Steven Smith, who is among the South Atlantic Conference leaders in just about every offensive stat.

Emory & Henry (17-33, 8-22) didn’t qualify for the SAC Tournament, but won the middle game of its final series of the season at home against Wingate. Smith went 7-for-13 in the Wingate series.

Smith had three four-hit games this season and had at least one hit in 27 of his last 28 games.

A West Rowan graduate, Smith is second in the league in batting average (.420), hits (86) and RBIs (58). He scored 53 runs.

The 5-foot-9, 165-pound third baseman batted third for the Wasps.He hit 12 homers, fifth in the SAC.

Smith played the 2021 and 2022 seasons for Caldwell Community College.

As a junior at Emory & Henry, he had five homers, 14 RBIs and a .240 batting average before breaking out in a big was as a senior.
