High school softball: Falcons pound homers, split 2

MOUNT ULLA — West Rowan’s softball team had the bats sizzling again but split two games on Wednesday and Thursday.

South Caldwell outscored the Falcons 12-11 on Wednesday. West came back for a crucial 8-4 South Piedmont Conference win against Central Cabarrus on Thursday.

In the game at South Caldwell, the Falcons trailed 11-6 going to the seventh but scored five runs to tie. South Caldwell (19-2) won with a run in the bottom of the seventh. Riley Haggas launched her sixth and seventh homers and drove in four runs for West. Arabelle Shulenburger went 4-for-4 with her third homer and knocked in four. EA Nance had three hits, including a double and her seventh homer. Reese Poole and Taylor Keller had three hits each.

In the Central Cabarrus game at home, West (16-3, 13-1) stayed tied for first in the South Piedmont Conference with East Rowan by beating the Vikings, 8-4.

West built an 8-1 lead and had plenty of cushion when Central made some noise in the seventh. Tess Hedrick and Haley Rezy homered for Central.

Winning pitcher Shulenburger went 3-for-4 and socked her fourth homer. Poole and Nance had two hits. Poole and Haggas had doubles. Ella Doby and Ava Baxter had two RBIs.

West’s only SPC loss was at East Rowan. West hosts East on Tuesday in a game that will decide the league championship. West also has a game left with last-place Robinson.
