West Rowan HS teacher charged with statutory rape involving student

A West Rowan High School history teacher was arrested on Thursday and faces charges stemming from a relationship with a student.

Christyan Alfonso Cabrera, 25, is charged with committing a crime against nature, statutory rape of a child, statutory sex offense with a child and a sex act with a student.

According to information from the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office, someone notified the school resource officer at West Rowan on March 21 about an “inappropriate relationship” involving a school employee and a student.

Cabrera, who taught world history, allegedly had sexual intercourse with a student in his classroom while it was empty. Reports indicate that he allegedly committed “other sexual acts with the student while inside the school, all occurring between Jan. 9 and March 19, 2025.”

Investigators obtained arrest warrants for Cabrera and he was taken into custody on Thursday shortly after 3 p.m.. He was placed into the Rowan County Detention Center with no bond.

His first scheduled appearance in court will be Friday.
