Two motor vehicle crashes in the same area and within hours of one another caused a section of northbound Interstate 85 to be closed for a total of at least five hours Saturday night.

The first crash involving multiple vehicles happened near mile marker 82 on the northbound side of the highway around 6 p.m. and the roadway was closed. A tractor-trailer overturned and a hole ripped in the side of the back of the trailer when it hit the guardrail. Material that appeared to be paper product spilled out on the highway.

No injuries were reported in that crash.

The roadway was closed for at least two and a half hours and as that scene was beginning to clear, a second crash at exit 79 northbound on the highway was reported with one victim pinned in the vehicle. That closed down the highway once again and at least one person was taken to area hospital for treatment.

Miller’s Ferry fire department, Salisbury fire department and Rowan County Rescue were among those responding. The rescue squad responded to eight calls in a 24 hour period this past weekend, according to reports.
