KANNAPOLIS  — Six people — three adults and three children — were displaced in a two-alarm fire that was reported about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday night, according to the American Red Cross, who is assisting the family.

The fire was initially reported to be in a commercial automotive garage attached to a two-story home in the 500 block of West 9th Street. There was some conflicting information initially that had the fire on Kellar Avenue.

According to reports from fire officials, Station 1 crews arrived first and observed smoke coming from the garage, however the fire was originating from the house.

Firefighters immediately went inside to attack the fire and look for possible victims, however conditions deteriorated, at which time additional assistance was requested and a second alarm issued.

As crews continued to fight the fire, signs of collapse became apparent and dangerous, forcing the incident commander to declare a “Code Red,” calling all firefighters out of the structure immediately.

Firefighters then worked to contain the fire and to protect neighboring homes from outside the home.

One resident was treated by EMS at the scene then taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and two cats are deceased. No other injuries were reported.

Kannapolis Fire was assisted by firefighters from Atwell, Landis, China Grove and Salisbury Fire Departments while Concord, Locke, Coldwater and Odell provided coverage. Kannapolis Police, Rowan EMS and Rowan County Rescue Squad were also on scene, along with the American Red Cross.

The investigation into the cause of the fire continues.
