High school baseball: Falcons, Mustangs win; Cougars lose a close one

MOUNT ULLA — West Rowan boosted its record to 7-1 with an 8-4 non-conference win against Alexander Central.

Leading 4-3, West tacked on four runs in the bottom of the sixth that proved decisive.

Maddox Moore (3-0) pitched into the sixth inning and struck out six. He got relief help from Eli Graham for the last five outs.

Carter Durant drove in three runs. Graham, Brice Knox, Ben Koontz and Brody Pope drove in a run each.

Moore, who is batting .571, and Durant had two hits. Pope, Knox and Luke Pomczka rapped doubles.

GRANITE QUARRY — East Rowan scored in double figures for the fifth time and beat Lake Norman 13-6 in a non-conference game.

The Wildcats scored two in the top of the first, but the Mustangs (6-2) got seven runs in the bottom of the half to take charge.

Brady Ailshie (2-0) struck out seven and got credit for the win. Andrew Myrick and Harrison Ailshie combined to get the last five outs.

Josiah Ninteau had a double and drove in five runs.

Harrison Ailshie slugged his third homer and drove in three runs. East also got RBIs from Krys Hernandez, Mason Phelps and Hunter Goodman. Phelps had a double.

CHINA GROVE — Carson Kirk hit Carson’s first homer of the season, but the Cougars lost another low-scoring game, falling 2-1 to West Stanly.

Kirk’s homer in the third provided a 1-0 lead in the non-conference game, but the Cougars (2-5) couldn’t score again. TJ Harris had a double.

Corbin Hales (0-2) pitched five strong innings but took the loss. Dylan Alexander pitched well in the sixth and seventh.
