We need to remember, especially over the course of the next few months, the words of the German pastor and theologian Martin Niemoller:

“First, they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out — because I was not a socialist.

Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out — because I was not a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out — because I was not a Jew.

Then they come for me — and there was no one left to speak for me.”

These words reflected his early complicity in Nazi Germany and later change of heart.

First, they came for the immigrants. Will anyone speak out today?
