SPENCER — Firefighters were called to a tractor-trailer on fire on the southbound side of Interstate 85 overnight Friday night and during the response, a Miller’s Ferry fire truck was hit by a passing car.
At 12:05 a.m., emergency dispatch sent firefighters to a truck on fire at mile marker 80, just prior to the Long Ferry Road exit 79. Crews in the first fire truck on scene confirmed the truck was fully involved and asked for shielding from the passing traffic.
While firefighters were actively working to control the fire, a passing car hit one of the fire trucks, causing significant damage, but no firefighters were hurt. The driver of the car was pinned in the vehicle but updates are not yet available on their condition. The highway was closed until about 5:30 a.m. because of the incident.
N.C. Highway Patrol responded to the scene and is investigating.
“Thank you to all the fire, EMS, law enforcement and dispatch that assisted during this event, “said Millers Ferry Fire Chief Joshua Fox.
