Moore’s Chapel AME Zion Church will celebrate Women’s History Month with a special service on Sunday during the 10 a.m. worship service.
The national theme is “Moving Forward Together: Women Educating and Inspiring Generations,” with Marchell Adams-David, the Raleigh city manager, as the guest speaker.
A native of Richmond County, Adams-David is the first African American and first female to hold this position. She was selected to serve in this capacity in 2014. Previously, she was the assistant city manager of Raleigh. Prior to that, she served the city of Hamlet for 20.5 years — the last 13 as city manager. Her efforts in community development, downtown revitalization, fiscal accountability and strategic planning helped the Hamlet to brand itself as “The Little Town that Does.”
A 1988 graduate of Richmond Senior High School, Adams-David has always valued education and the opportunities that a solid education affords. A two-time graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill, she earned her bachelor’s degree in public policy analysis with an emphasis in state and local administration and her master’s of public administration with a concentration in public management. She was an instructor at Richmond Community College and served as an adjunct professor for the University of North Carolina at Pembroke in the Political Science/Pubic Administration Department for 20 years and intends to continue teaching after retirement from local government.
In her role as Raleigh’s city manager, Adams-David leads the city of more than 500,000 people, more than 4,100 full-time employees, more than 3,000 part-time employees and a capital and operating budget of $1.5 billion. She is married to Michael Douglas and together they have six children.
She is a member of several political, civic and community organizations and is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. She attends church at the Fountain of Raleigh Fellowship.
Moore’s Chapel is located at 500 Partee Street, Salisbury. Rev. Robert N. Kelley Jr., serves as pastor.
