An early morning pursuit Monday that started in Forsyth County ended in Rowan County when deputies from both sheriff’s offices managed to stop a driver who had run from a traffic stop.

According to Rowan County Sheriff’s Office, the Forsyth County deputies requested assistance at 2:15 a.m. in stopping a silver Hyndai Elantra that was racing along I-85 southbound at speeds of up to 103 mph.

Rowan deputies got in position to assist, and put stop sticks out at multiple exits along the highway, but the car’s driver changed lanes to avoid them.

As the Hyundai closed in on the Lane Street exit, Forsyth deputies broke off the pursuit, but Rowan stayed engaged, reaching the I-77 and I-85 connection.

The Hyundai driver then tried to drive around other vehicles on the highway, in the process spinning out of control and striking the right guard wall, causing the car to
roll approximately four times.

Deputies were able to take the driver and two passengers in the vehicle into custody, discovering later that all three were juveniles. All three were transported to a local hospital where they were treated for minor injuries and released into the custody of parents.

Juvenile referrals for felony fleeing to elude are pending. Because of their age, legally they cannot be publicly identified.
