College women’s basketball: Catawba wins on Senior Day

SALISBURY — Senior Day transpired exactly as it’s supposed to at Goodman Arena on Saturday.
Catawba’s women’s basketball team won in front of 565 fans, and the seniors led the way in their finale on their home court.
The Indians used a big edge in the third quarter to beat UVA Wise 69-56. The Cavaliers (11-17, 8-16) turned it over 29 times, shot 38 percent and ended their season.
Katlin Burger scored 24 for the visitors.
Senior Janiya Foskey led the Indians (17-11, 15-9) with 23 points on 7-for-10 shooting. Seniors Jada Porter and Nala Baker scored 11 each, with Porter making three 3-pointers.
Senior Natalie Fuertes Lara had six steals, while senior Abbi Svenson contributed two free throws.
Mary Spry (Carson) had six points and five rebounds. Bailee Goodlett (North Rowan) had four points and three assists.
Catawba had slim edges in the turnover and rebounding battles and had a good shooting day with 46-percent accuracy. Catawba is shooting 40 percent for the season.
Catawba went 10-4 at home and finished fifth in the South Atlantic Conference.
Catawba will play fourth-seeded Wingate in the first round of the SAC Tournament. Tip is set for 5 p.m. on Wednesday at the Rock Hill Event Center.
