SALISBURY — Catawba’s men’s basketball team destroyed UVA Wise 104-54 on Saturday’s Senior Day at Goodman Arena.
Kris Robinson went out with a bang, with eight 3-pointers and 32 points in 26 minutes. He broke Catawba records for 3-pointers in a season (85), 3-pointers in a career (279) and career free-throw percentage (85.4).
Fans assembled to honor the five rostered seniors, plus two developmental team seniors, had to wonder how in the world UVA Wise finished ahead of Catawba in the final South Atlantic Conference standings, but that’s reality and that’s how up and down the Indians have been this season. Catawba (17-11, 14-10) placed sixth, one game behind the Cavaliers (19-10, 15-9), who earned the No. 4 seed for the upcoming league tournament.
Like Catawba, UVA Wise was far tougher at home than on the road. UVA Wise beat the Indians in a close game at home in November.
UVA Wise was coming off a triple-overtime road win on Wednesday, so maybe the Cavaliers didn’t have anything left in the tank. Catawba had no shortage of energy, so it was over at halftime, with the Indians in control, 50-23.
UVA Wise had zero second-chance points, as Catawba won 44-26 on the boards. The Indians had a 21-11 edge in the turnover column. Catawba shot a blistering 51.4 percent, while holding the Cavaliers to 37.3.
Montraivis White scored 14 for the Indians. Zion McDuffie added 10.
Carson Daniel had seven assists.
There was a special Senior Day moment for Cameron Ming. He started for the Indians and swished a 3-pointer on the first shot attempt of his career.
Catawba plays third-seeded Coker on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. in Rock Hill in the opening round of the SAC tourney.
