BASEBALL

GRANITE QUARRY — East Rowan, defending champs in 3A, opened the season on Tuesday with a 26-0 romp against Concord at Staton Field.

East scored 18 runs in the second inning of the South Piedmont Conference game.

Mason Phelps went 3-for-3 with four RBIs to lead the onslaught by the Mustangs.

Phelps and Harrison Ailshie hit home runs.

Nathan Collins went 3-for-3.  Will Klingler went 2-for-2.

Phelps was credited with the win on the mound.

LANDIS — West Rowan pounded South Rowan 11-1 in a season opener on Tuesday.

Maddox Moore was the winning pitcher in the five-inning SPC game.

Moore and Brody Pope had three hits each.

Pope and Luke Ponczka hit homers for the Falcons.

HUNTERSVILLE — Carson lost 3-1 at Lake Norman Charter in Tuesday’s SPC game.

Jayven Parks and Cam Williamson had two hits each for the Cougars. TJ Harris had the RBI.

Kendal Sifford pitched four innings for the Cougars.

Two of Carson’s top hurlers — Corbin Hales and Maverick Walters – finished the basketball season on Tuesday night, so the Cougars will have more mound depth later in the week.

Salisbury lost 19-1 to Trinity, while North Rowan lost 17-3 to North Hills Christian.

Caleb Everett, Ethan Prange, Jaden Brown, Zane Smith and Zion Gillespie had hits for the Cavaliers.

A.L. Brown senior CJ Gray signed with NC State but projects as a very high draft pick.

 

SOFTBALL

LANDIS — West Rowan had an exciting 8-7 win at South Rowan in South Piedmont Conference action on Tuesday.

Pitchers Arabelle Shulenburger (West) and Remi Haggerty (South) pitched complete games.

West (1-0, 1-0) rallied from a 6-1 deficit to beat the Raiders (1-1, 0-1).

Reese Poole, EA Nance and Ava Baxter homered for the Falcons.

Poole had three RBIs.

Raney Phelps had four hits. Baxter and Kayla Burns had three hits.

Leisha Carter, Danica Krieg and Kynlee Dextraze had doubles for South.

Dextraze drove in three runs.

Lexie Ritchie, Cressley Patterson, Haggerty and Carter had two hits for the Raiders.

East Rowan took a 5-1 SPC win against Concord on Tuesday.

Concord is improved, and the Mustangs still had a number of players on the basketball court.

Camryn Perkins pitched a three-hitter for the win.

Maicy Miller had a homer and double. She was filling in at third base for her sister, Kori, who plays basketball.

Madi Tigert also had two hits for East.

East will be at full strength for a big game with Mooresville on Thursday.

KANNAPOLIS – A.L. Brown had a seven-run third inning and beat Mount Pleasant 14-1 on Tuesday.

Madyson Baker had three hits, including a triple, and drove in five runs.

Myla McNeely had three hits and knocked in two.. Kennedy Yow had two hits.

Mary Katherine Black was the winning pitcher. She held the Tigers to three hits.

 

GIRLS SOCCER

CHINA GROVE — South Rowan beat West Rowan 5-1 in a Rowan Cup semifinal played on Tuesday at Carson.

Cailynn Withers had four assists for the Raiders.

Ella Morgan scored twice for South, while Brooke Oehler, Avery Rawlings and Sophie Steedley had a goal each.

Margo Maples made eight saves for the Raiders.

A.L. Brown won 4-2 against Carson in the other Rowan Cup semifinal.

Cougar goals were scored by Skarlett Henriquez and Jasmin Escobar.

A.L. Brown and South are scheduled to play the championship game at Carson on Thursday after a third-place game between West and Carson.

 

BOYS TENNIS

WELCOME – Salisbury’s boys tennis team got the season started on Monday with a 9-0 win at North Davidson.

The Hornets won 9-0 again in non-conference play on Tuesday against Central Davidson.

Coach Milton Griffith used the same lineup for both matches — AJ Jarrell, Gray Davis, Bryant Davis, Ben Lawson, Farrah Hassan and Jashaun Epps.

Doubles partners were Jarrell-Gray Davis, Bryant Davis-Lawson and Hassan-Epps.

LANDIS — West Rowan won 9-0 at South Rowan on Monday in South Piedmont Conference action.

West’s lineup includes seniors Dylan Parrish and Max Brown at the top, followed by sophomores Callen Batts, Phineas Mixon, Jaxon Ramsey and John Walters.

Parrish-Brown won the No. 1 doubles match.

Carson got started Monday with a 9-0 SPC loss to Lake Norman Charter.

 

BOYS GOLF

CONCORD — Lake Norman Charter edged East Rowan in the first South Piedmont Conference golf match on Tuesday at Rocky River.

Northwest Cabarrus’ Talan Harrison was medalist with a 34 and led the Trojans to third place in the team scoring.

East shot 165 to finish three shots behind the Knights. Brady McIntyre shot 37 and was second overall. Freshman Brody Benfield shot 40, and freshman Griffin Robbins shot 43. East’s fourth scorer was Mason Mainville with a 45.

Dane Wheeler shot 43 and led South Rowan to fourth place (185). Miles Carden (45), Carson Hurst (47) and Cooper Welch (50) were the other South scorers.

Salisbury shot 152 to win a non-conference match.

John McCoy led the Hornets with a 36. Jackson Sparger and Jacob Trainor shot 38s.

Warren Fesperman shot 40 and was a strong fourth scorer.
