GRANITE QUARRY — Police are actively searching for two men who tried to steal a camper from Kerns Street across from Granite Lake Park about 11 a.m. today, according to Police Chief Todd Taylor.
Police received a call from a resident saying he had a camper in the middle of the road, blocking his driveway, said Taylor. It turns out thieves had tried to steal the camper, and it was not their first stop.
The two reportedly managed to steal a set of packages from a front porch in the village off of Faith Road about 10 a.m. before stepping up to try to steal the camper.
“They cut the lock on the camper and tried to hook it up” to the trailer hitch on a 15-20-foot U-Haul truck, said Taylor. “They apparently didn’t get it hooked up correctly and they ended up dragging the camper down the road about a block before they just abandoned it.”
Taylor said he expects there to be additional reports of theft, and if anyone has had things stolen this morning in the area, he asks that they call 911 to report it.
Anyone who may have information on the thieves is asked to call the Granite Quarry police department at 704-279-2952 and leave a message for the officer on duty.
