From staff reports
SALISBURY — Salisbury’s girls soccer team rallied for a 3-2 win against East Rowan in Monday’s non-conference game.
East led 1-0 and 2-1 on goals by Kailin Bomley and Lelu Hill.
Down 2-1 at the half, the Hornets made a comeback and shut out the Mustangs in the second half.
Salisbury got goals from Maddie Crabb, Stephany Quintero and senior captain Addie Griffith.
Griffith had the game-winner. Freshman Anna Kate Goodman battled through illness to provide assists on the final two goals.
Salisbury got excellent play from senior Danna Nunez Sanchez (who returned to the team after last playing her sophomore year) and Lola Koontz, who steps into the role of defensive leader for the Hornets.
“We had a comparatively small team last year,” Salisbury head coach Matt Parrish said. “We lost a third of that team to graduation and players that transferred. As a result, we had a lot of inexperience on the field tonight. Combine that with three weeks of bad weather and about five practices total and we had a match that came down to guts and heart more than skill and precision. Both teams worked hard. We have girls that are still participating in basketball. We had girls that were under the weather and banged up. I was proud of our girls for giving that last bit of effort and seeing the result out. ”
Salisbury plays at Gray Stone on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
