College women’s basketball: Blue Bears win finale

WINSTON-SALEM — Livingstone’s women’s basketball team held Winston-Salem State to two points in the second quarter and took a 66-55 road victory at Joel Coliseum to close the CIAA regular season.

It wasn’t pretty. Livingstone (11-16, 9-7) won with 39-percent shooting, only two 3-pointers and 25 turnovers. The Blue Bears did a lot of their damage at the foul line, making 24 of 32 free throws.

Winston-Salem State had a big advantage in the turnover column, but shot a dismal 23 percent and made only one 3-pointer.

Samiyah Briggs scored 19 for the Blue Bears. Morgan Kelson had 12, and Nielle Reaves had 10.

Christiana McLean led the Rams with 13.

Livingstone had a 7-3 record in Southern Division games and will be a No. 2 seed for the upcoming CIAA Tournament in Baltimore.

That automatically puts Livingstone in the quarterfinals. The Blue Bears will play on the 27th. Winston-Salem State will play on the 25th against Bowie State.
