It’s time for young participants to showcase their skills and creativity at the upcoming 4-H presentations, talent and expressive arts events. Youths ages 5-18 (as of Jan. 1, 2025) are invited to take part in these exciting competitions, which will be held during County Activity Day on the evening of April 25 at the Extension office.

To participate in any of these events, pre-registration is required. Registration opens on March 1, through 4-HOnline under the “events” section. The deadline to register is April 10. Participants needing assistance with enrolling in 4-HOnline or registering for the events can contact laura_allen@ncsu.edu.

Important details:

  • Each child may enter one presentation.
  • Each child may participate in one talent demonstration.
  • Expressive arts entries are unlimited; however, each participant may submit only one entry per category.
  • All pre-registered expressive arts entries must be submitted to the Extension office by 12 p.m. on Tuesday, April 22, to be judged before County Activity Day. Entries and award ribbons will be displayed at the event on April 25.
  • All presentations and talent demonstrations will be performed in person before a panel of judges on April 25.

For preparation and guidance, participants are encouraged to review the following resources:

  • 4-H presentation categories (pages 5-13 for descriptions; pages 14-15 for rules)
  • 4-H presentation scoring rubrics & additional information
  • 4-H entertains (talent competition)
  • Expressive arts rules, categories & entry form

In today’s world, practicing public speaking, participating in talent showcases and engaging in artwork competitions are essential for youth development. These activities help young individuals build confidence, improve communication skills and develop creativity — important qualities that benefit them academically, socially and professionally.

Public speaking:
Public speaking enhances a child’s ability to express ideas clearly and persuasively. It fosters self-assurance and teaches critical thinking, organization and the ability to engage with an audience. These skills prove invaluable in future educational and career opportunities.

Talent competitions:
Participating in talent shows helps youth embrace their passions, whether in music, dance, theater or other performance arts. It encourages discipline, perseverance and stage presence, all while boosting self-esteem and providing constructive feedback for improvement.

Expressive arts:
Engaging in expressive arts competitions allows youth to explore their creativity and convey emotions through visual or written art forms. It nurtures problem-solving skills, patience and a sense of accomplishment when their work is recognized and displayed.

By participating in programs like 4-H presentations, talent and expressive arts, young individuals cultivate essential life skills that prepare them for success. These experiences not only foster personal growth but also build a foundation for leadership and lifelong learning.

I hope that you will strongly consider having the children and teens in your life participate in these upcoming beneficial 4-H opportunities.
