KANNAPOLIS — A.L. Brown’s boys have taken some beatings in the 4A Greater Metro Conference this season, but the Wonders were way too quick and physical for East Rowan in Wednesday’s non-conference matchup.
The Wonders used steals and layups off their press to fashion a 20-9 lead after a quarter and had the game under control by halftime with a 44-16 edge. The final was 87-59.
The Wonders had a good shooting night with 12 3-pointers.
Ter’Ryan “TR” Brewer scored 23 to lead the Wonders (6-18). Caleb Ford and Masiah Bennermon scored 15 each. Jeremiah Christopher had 14.
East made four 3-pointers, Freshman Jaden Eudy made the only one the Mustangs hit in the first half. Aiden Lino made the other three during a hot streak in the third quarter.
Brody Thomas scored 24 for the Mustangs (2-21), with 19 in the second half. He got his points attacking the rim, and he made some tough finishes in traffic.
“We had some guys play well,” East coach Trey Ledbetter said. “I was impressed that freshman Brady Ailshie took some more steps. He’s adapted to how physical varsity basketball is and he is trying to assert himself. He’s going to be a very good high school player. The same can be said for (freshman) Jaxon Lyons.”
The Wonders went 2-10 in the GNAC and will be seeded sixth in the league tournament. East Rowan will be the 8 seed for the South Piedmont Conference Tournament and will play at regular-season champ Robinson in the first round.
East Rowan 10 6 19 22 — 57
A.L. Brown 20 24 19 22 — 89
EAST scoring — Thomas 24, Lino 12, Ailshie 6, Lyons 4, Shive 4, Reid 4, Eudy 3.
