College softball
Freshman Emma Clarke (West Rowan) started at catcher and got her first college hit, a double, for Tennessee in an 8-3 win against Pittsburgh.
The Vols got off to a 5-1 start.

Katie Peeler (Salisbury) is getting starts in center field for Furman. She started off 1-for-7, but her first college hit was a triple.

Chowan’s Mckenzie Misenheimer (East Rowan) batted .444 with two homers and seven RBIs as the Hawks got off to a 5-1 start.

Lenoir-Rhyne left fielder Abbey Nixon (Carson) is off to a good start. She’s 6-for-18 (.333) with four RBIs.

Karsen Simpson (West Rowan) is batting .304 for Emory & Henry. She’s 7-for-23 (.304) with a double, a triple and seven RBIs.

Kary Hales (Carson) helped Catawba get off to a 5-3 start for new interim head coach Allie Marshall.
Hales is 11-for-27 (.348) with four RBIs.
College baseball
Emory & Henry started 1-5, but Steven Smith (West Rowan) was a bright spot. He went 11-for-25 (.440) and scored 10 runs.
Brevard outfielder CP Pyle (Carson) got off to a slow start. Pyle is 2-for-13 with a double and one RBI after a three-game series with Averett.
Junior college baseball
Luke Graham got off to a sizzling start for Surry Community College. Graham batted .600 as the Knights won their first six games. Graham had a homer, five doubles and nine RBIs in his first 15 at-bats.
Zach McNeely (West Rowan) went 8-for-15 (,533) for Surry with four RBIs. Elijah Palmer (West Rowan) went 12-for-23 (.522) for Surry with three doubles and nine RBIs. Emory Taylor (Carson) was 5-for-19 with two RBIs.
Freshmen Brett Morris (South Rowan) and Aaron Jones (South Rowan) got their first college hits for Surry.
Minor league baseball
Pitcher Owen White (Carson) has been designated for assignment by the New York Yankees.
White is off the 40-man roster for the Yankees. He’ll be claimed by another team on waivers, traded or will work out a minor league contract with the Yankees.
High school volleyball
South Rowan setter Laney Beaver has committed to Averett.
High school football
West Rowan defensive back Israel Ford committed to North Carolina A&T.
West Rowan running back Jaylen Neely signed with Minnesota West Community & Technical College.
North Rowan lineman KaMahri Feamster committed to Wingate.
High school softball
West Rowan slugger EA Nance is headed to Pfeiffer.
High school basketball
The North Hills boys romped 61-36 at home against Bradford Academy in the first round of the NCISAA 1A playoffs on Tuedsay.
Maverick Ball scored 17 for the Eagles. Gio Ortiz had 11. Noah Dendy and Hayden Lawson scored 10 each.
North Hills plays at Statesville Christian on Thursday.
Local golf
GARS members played at The Revival at the Crescent.
Low ‘A’ Flight player was Frank Gobble with a net of 66.32.
Low ‘B’ Flight player was Steve Matteson with a net of 69.88.
Low ‘C’ Flight player was Joe Dunn with a net of 69.02.
Low ‘D’ Flight player was Tom Dodge with a net of 66.55.
Gobble shot a 78 to win low gross, while Dodge won low net.
Super Senior was Andy Griffin with a net of 66.97.
