Children’s programs have resumed at Rowan Public Library following a winter break. In addition to Storytimes at all locations and a Homeschool STEAM class offered at the China Grove location; children may also attend Art in the Afternoon at all locations. This interactive program not only provides children with the opportunity to take home something they have made, but to also learn about art history, techniques and appreciation.
Art in the Afternoon is offered at all four Rowan Public Library locations each week. Children’s Library Associate Chelsea Espy describes the program at the China Grove location as,” A short lesson about the artist, their work, and how we see/use their art today. We use the majority of the program time to create a take home piece that teaches or utilizes an art technique the artist we learned about uses in their own work.” Chelsea creates a lesson plan each week that introduces a notable artist and highlights their works and technique. The artists studied over the next several months will vary from classical artists such as Vincent Van Gogh to modern artists, such as Lakwena Maciver.
These lessons are enhanced using the broad collection of juvenile books in the RPL collection. Chelsea explains, “In some lessons we may talk about a juvenile chapter book or picture book where we explore art based on the book itself or by the illustrator.” It is not unusual for Chelsea to provide a reading of a specific book as children work on their art project. The Feb. 11 program at China Grove will focus on the art in the Jason Reynolds book “Stunt Boy.” Children will learn about the award-winning author and the art used in his graphic novel. They will then create their own superhero cape and decorate it using their own artistic style.
Art in the Afternoon is designed for first through fifth graders, though all are welcome. Runtime is approximately one hour. Children ages 8 and under must be accompanied by a responsible caregiver (age 16+). No registration is required, and all materials are provided.
