SALISBURY — Catawba’s women’s basketball team shot 3-for-18 from 3-point range and took a 77-67 loss against Anderson.

Most of those missed Catawba shots ended up in the hands of Anderson’s Diamond McDowell, who grabbed 16 of her 19 rebounds on the defensive end to close out Catawba possessions.

McDowell led Asheboro to a state runner-up finish in 3A four years ago. Her team lost to an undefeated Carson squad that included Catawba’s Mary Spry in the championship game.

But Saturday’s game at Goodman Arena belonged to McDowell, who had 18 points, and teammate Zamiya Passmore, who had 22 points and eight assists. The Trojans (15-9, 11-7) ruled the boards in a battle of two of the South Atlantic Conference’s upper-tier teams.

Catawba (13-9, 11-7) led 36-35 at halftime, but Anderson was stronger in the second half.

Catawba shot 45 percent, but the 3-point struggle hurt and the Indians couldn’t get to the foul line. Catawba shot only four free throws for the entire game, which may be some kind of record.

Janiya Foskey stayed on a roll with 20 points — 10 2s —and seven rebounds for the Indians. Bailee Goodlett (North Rowan) played very well with 14 points on 7-for-19 shooting. She had four assists and no turnovers. Nala Baker was 1-for-8 on 3s but still managed to score 13.
